The ensemble in the heart of Dessau The Schloss and Park Georgium

Beside the Wörlitzer Park, the Georgium is the most significant landscape garden in the English style in the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz.

It was created by hereditary prince Johann Georg (1748–1811), the younger brother of Prince Franz, and is named after him. Commencing in 1780, the prince had a classicist country residence, the Schloss Georgium, built by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff in a riverside forest setting, to the north of the buildings of Dessau as they existed at the time. As in Wörlitz, numerous classicist and romantic pieces of garden architecture and sculpture are integrated harmoniously into the natural surroundings of this expansive English park. The gradual transition from artistically designed landscape to natural landscape can be experienced here in a particularly impressive way.


Today, the Georgium is the responsibility of the town of Dessau. The Schloss contains the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie, with its abundant collection of historic German and Dutch painting and extensive collection of graphical works. The Schloss and the collections will remain closed until 2019 owing to extensive renovation work. During the renovation work, a representative selection of masterpieces from the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie will be on display in an interim exhibition at the Museum für Stadtgeschichte or Museum of Civic History (in the Johannbau building). Special exhibitions and events will take place in the orangery in the Park.
