The artificial rock island of “Stein” is surely the most extraordinary structure in the Wörlitzer Park.
Its architecture combines a number of Neapolitan memories: it is home to an ancient theatre, a supporting wall based upon that of the Gymnasium of Taormina, a number of grottoes, a columbarium, and the so-called “Italian Baths.” Additionally, there is a precise recreation of the “Villa Emma,” which belonged to the British diplomat Sir William Hamilton and was situated in Naples, on the Gulf. The small pavilion possesses three excellently fitted-out rooms with elaborate murals on the walls and ceilings, and a large number of paintings and prints. The whole composition culminates in an artificial volcano. The inspiration for this construction came from Prince Franz’s visit to Naples and Pompeii in 1766.
